  • Better Man - Technical Oner

Stabilimage Films provided the specialist gimbal system and technical operating solution for the ambitious Regent Street dance sequence in Better Man, working with cinematographer Erik Wilson BSC and the camera, grip and VFX teams.

Shot on an ARRI LF and operated remotely using DJI Master Wheels, the DJI Ronin 2 was extensively configured to accommodate Wētā FX’s dual witness-camera system used to capture the data required for the film’s Robbie Williams character.

The sequence involved a series of complex camera moves and hand-offs between a Scorpio 45 crane, handheld operation and an open-top London bus. With the complete camera, VFX equipment and cabling weighing approximately 18kg, the system had to remain stable while moving rapidly between very different operating configurations.

Filmed over three nights on a closed Regent Street, the sequence culminated in a large-scale choreographed performance involving around 500 dancers. Multiple sections and takes were precisely stitched together to create the finished continuous sequence.

The project remains one of the most technically challenging and ambitious gimbal sequences we have undertaken.

  • EE Broadband Gaming Commercial – Oner

This 60-second EE Broadband commercial was created as a genuine continuous take, using a carefully choreographed series of gimbal hand-offs and remote camera operation to move seamlessly from exterior to interior.

The shot began from a moving rickshaw, with the first gimbal operator stepping off and following the action towards a partially constructed car, which was completed digitally in post-production. The camera travelled through the rear of the vehicle before following the performer towards the house, where the gimbal was passed through a window to a second operator.

From there, the camera continued through the living room, up the stairs and into the bedroom, eventually settling behind the two principal actors for the final reveal.

While two operators physically carried the gimbal through the sequence, Rich Cornelius ACO remotely operated the camera throughout using wheels.

With no concealed cuts, much of the challenge came from refining the timing and positioning of every stage of the move while maintaining reliable wireless video and remote control over the considerable distance travelled by the camera.

Each commercial in the three-part campaign was given a full shooting day, allowing the choreography and technical execution to be progressively refined.

  • Ted Lasso Series Finale – Single Take

For the Ted Lasso series finale, Rich Cornelius ACO operated a three-minute continuous-style sequence using a DJI Ronin 2 with the production’s ARRI Mini LF and Tokina Vista Prime camera package.

The shot was designed to flow continuously through the scene, with a concealed cut incorporated because of the physical restrictions of the set. The entire sequence was gimbal operated using the Flowcine GLink and required careful coordination between the camera and cast to ensure everyone arrived at precisely the right position at the right moment.

Around nine takes were completed, with the camera movement evolving throughout the process. Rather than simply repeating the original plan, each take provided an opportunity to refine the timing, positioning and relationship between the camera and performers, ultimately developing the shot beyond its initial concept.

The result is a three-minute sequence in which the complexity of the camera movement is deliberately unobtrusive, allowing the choreography, performances and timing of the cast to drive the shot.
